Benefits of Straw Bale Construction

1)  Renewable Materials (Green Construction)

Straw is a recycled material.  It is the stalks that are left in the field after the grain tops have been removed.  The stalks are then bailed and used for building.  Straw can be produced from all types of grains; wheat, oats, barley, rye, etc. Unlike lumber, where trees need up to 40 years to mature, straw is available after each year's grain crop is harvested and is often burned in the field. Each year, trees are subject to wind, fire, drought, and insect infestation.  Since trees are the best absorbers of carbon in the atmosphere, they should not be harvested. I believe the use of wood is an irresponsible indulgence

2) Lower Construction Costs

Since bales cost less per sq. ft. of wall than 2 by 6 studs, and since lay people can help build the walls (with strict supervision), the overall construction costs are lower. The walls are less susceptible to strong winds, earthquakes, fire and insects.

3) Dust and Noise Control

Cars on the driveway adjacent to my home cannot be heard.  Interior dust does not collect

4) Energy Savings

With the insulative factor from 2 foot think walls and the use of ceiling fans, the house interior stays relatively cool.  After subtracting the basic charge and the taxes from my Phoenix utility bill last summer, my actual cost for kWh used in July was $18; for August it was $14.
